The MkIV range of Zephyrs and Zodiacs was released by Ford in the UK in April 1966 The new models were a radical change from the previous three Marks that had all used straight 6 motors and running gear based on the very first Zephyr introduced in 1951, albeit with numerous modifications. The MkIV range used V4 and V6 motors - the base model Zephyr fitted with a 2 litre V4 power unit, the Zephyr V6 a 2.5 litre and the Zodiac a 3 litre V6. These cars were the heaviest and largest Zephyrs produced, with the long bonnet and short boot accentuating the length of the vehicle. The new range was initially dogged by problems - suggested by some as being due to the haste with which Ford released the new vehicles - and really never recovered from the bad publicity. In 1966 the MkIVs were very innovative, incorporating features that are even today considered selling points - V6 engines, 4 wheel disk brakes, independent rear suspension among others. The MkIV is still capable of cruising at well in excess of the open road speed limit with a very high degree of comfort, though their size and weight make for hard work driving and parking around town. Love them or hate them, they still turn heads wherever they go. |
